PRINCE GEORGE – Students from the University of Northern BC are leading discussions this week on climate change and sustainability practices for BC, and more specifically Prince George.

The panels are made up of UNBC Graduate Students along with community members and various UNBC Faculty Members.

On Wednesday the first session featured a discussion on Socio-ecological Climate Impacts in Northern BC.

The recent natural disasters in British Columbia were a large focus for the panel that debated how to deal with flooding, forest fires, and drought conditions.

Dr. Art Fredeen, a Professor and Director of the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institute (NRESi) spoke about the need for changes in our behaviour as we try to find a solution to accelerated climate change.

Fredeen noted many people believe technology and engineering will lead us out of the climate disaster humans have put themselves in, although those evolutions will not be able to completely do the trick.

Other panels discussed how to make Prince George more sustainable, with urban sprawl as one of many topics covered.

Panellists noted that Prince George still has a lot of room to grow to become a sustainable city.

Senior students in the UNBC Environmental Studies program have put on the series of panels that will wrap up on Friday with a session on empowering youth climate action.

You can watch the panels in person at UNBC or view them online from the comfort of your own home via zoom through their website.
