PRINCE GEORGE – Throughout October breast cancer awareness is a major topic. One in eight women develop breast cancer in their life time and one in 28 women are expected to die from this cancer. But, there are ways to catch it early.

“Screening mammograms are considered the international gold standard for detecting breast cancer early. Mammograms can usually find lumps two or three years before a woman or a primary care provider can field them.”

– Dr. Fatimah Alfaraj, Clinical Assistant, UHNBC

Doing monthly breast screening tests on your own is a good way to try and detect the cancer. There are lots of different symptoms though that can come up when detecting breast cancer.

“Breast cancer can include a palpable lump, but can also include nipple discharge or bleeding, change in the overall size or shape of their breast pain not related to menstrual cycle, change in their skin or a nipple.”
