PRINCE GEORGE – Family, friends, and community volunteers gathered in Prince George today to begin a community-led search for 22-year-old Kira Hammerstrom, who has been missing since May 13.

“We put the word out and people reacted really fast. Kira is a well loved person in this community as well, and people are definitely looking for her. This is probably the most upsetting thing of our lives,” said Damiond Hammerstrom, Kira’s cousin and a search organizer.

This group has been coordinating efforts via a Facebook page, where they have been mobilizing to walk and drive in various parts of the city, as well as take boats down rivers. She was last seen on Upland Street at around 8:30 p.m. on May 13, and has not been heard from since.

“If we don’t find anything in the perimeter of Prince George, we’re pretty much going to take it further out and go from there,” Damiond said.

“We need to start searching everywhere down south, too. I wanted to spread the word in some Facebook groups down that way as well. If people could go out and walk their dogs, if they can keep an eye on the shorelines of rivers that would connect to the Fraser River,” added Kaylee Douglas-Henshaw, Damiond’s girlfriend and a search organizer.

The community response to search efforts has been strong, with dozens of people taking part in any efforts to help out while also raising awareness, hoping anybody may find her or come forward with new information.

“Kira is super bubbly and funny, and everyone who knows her knows that she’s super, super funny, like anything that she says, you can crack up with her and she lights up rooms. Her five little siblings love her and miss her dearly, she’s a very good big sister to them. Our (Douglas-Henshaw’s and Damiond’s) kids love her as Auntie Kira and we all just want her home,” Douglas-Henshaw said.

“She’s pretty much like my little sister, everyone knows her as my little sister. She’s one of the most important people in my life,” Damiond added.

Both Damiond and Douglas-Henshaw say they plan on taking these search efforts on day at a time, hoping that continued searches and raising awareness lead to finding Kira.

“We just need her home, and I really want this search to be successful,” Douglas-Henshaw said.

Prince George RCMP have also confirmed its search remains ongoing, and asks if anyone has any information or sees Kira to please contact local police or Northern B.C. Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
