Vimy Ridge Remembered
PRINCE GEORGE – It is the 100 and first anniversary of one of the fiercest battles in Canadian history.
The battle of Vimy Ridge started April 9th and claimed 35-hundred Canadians. As a memorial to the thousands who perished at Vimy, a 100-hectare portion of the former battlefield is preserved as part of the memorial park that surrounds the monument.
After 101 years, it’s still important to remember that battle because it was a coming of age for the Canadian military.
“We were actually there as a Canadian army, fighting with the British. They had a British Commander bu all the other commanders were Canadians; Canadian divisions were lead by Canadian commanders,” says John Scott, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43. “Canada, after that battle, got its name on the armistice and all that. It became a fighting nation.”
There is a dinner this evening at the Legion in honour of the day.
