Two New Parks Coming To The City

The City plans to add two new parks to its current repertoire.

One will be located at the northeast end of the Foothills Bridge, a popular spot when the weather warms. But people are parking on Foothills Boulevard and the City has concerns over safety.

“We don’t have a final design on it yet,” says Gina Layte-Liston, Director of Public Works. “But the thought is that the upper part on the east side of Foothills would be the parking lot.”

Benches would be put on the area cleared out along the river. The budget for that park is $630,000.

Another park will be built in the downtown, behind the Wood Innovation and Design Centre on Fifth Avenue. It’s a project that has been in the City’s radar for more than three years. The budget of that park remains at $750,000 which was the budget when the footprint for the park was twice the current site. $330,000 of that money comes in the form of provincial grants, another $250,000 comes from Development Cost Charges and $120,000 comes from general revenue.

But Councillor Brian Skakun expresses the same concerns today as he did originally.

“My real concern is it could end up with needles in there, bottles and I don’t want us to spend a bunch of money on a park that’s just going to turn into a place where people are hanging out doing things that they shouldn’t be doing.”

It’s an issue park designers are well aware of.

“There is no question that is being taken into consideration when you’re looking at site lines and those types of things,” says Layte-Liston, who adds having people use the park help to deter the less desirable element.
