Scholarship Set up to Remember PGSS Teacher

PRINCE GEORGE – In his empty classroom at Prince George Senior Secondary, Vince Truant is remembered as a great teacher, motivator and friend. Mr.Truant taught for almost 30 years in District 57, first in Mackenzie then in Prince George. His specialty was Social Studies in particular Law 12.

It was Truant’s passion for Law that sparked interest from former student Cassidy Brunn to pursue a degree in criminology,  after he challenged her to play the role of prosecutor during a mock trial in his law 12 class. “He was more than a teacher,  he was a mentor he was a friend  and I really miss him.  I am who I am today because he believed in me,” said Brunn at PGSS.

“In our profession we always say that teaching is about relationship,  more about relationship and less about curriculum and Vince just had a way to connect with kids.  He established great relationships with students and the students absolutely adored him,” said Kap Manhas,  PGSS Principal.

It is believed Mr Truant passed away from complications from heart issues,  and now he’s left the hearts broken of former students, co-workers and family members who are now hoping to raise money in his memory. A goal of $50,000 for The Vince Truant Scholarship Fund has been set and a GoFundMe page set up.

Though no decisions have been made,  it’s likely the scholarship will go to a promising Law student.  While those who love him take time to grieve,  no decisions have been made on what will be done with Truant’s classroom either.  For now it sits quiet – a silent memory of a life gone too soon.

Vince Truant leaves behind a wife and two daughters.  A memorial will be held this Sunday January 20th at 2 pm at the Columbus Centre.  There are also plans to live stream his funeral through Facebook.
