Beef processing plant still planned, but with hurdles

PRINCE GEORGE – This coming July will be the third anniversary of announcing plans to build a beef processing plant in Northern BC and, if successful, it would be an operation like no other.

“It’s got a really progressive concept,” explains Larry Garrett, President of the Association. “It’s called New Generation Co-op. So the producers would actually own it.”

The BC Cattlemen’s Association says the logistics are still being looked at.

“We know for a fact, the closer we keep the cattle to the processing plant, the more opportunity there is to cut those costs,” explains Kevin Boon, the Association’s General Manager and the man doing the leg work.

However, there was some suggestion the lack of affordable shavings of a certain composition may be a hindrance, something Boon affects the entire agricultural community. But would it be the end of the packing plant plans? Not likely.

“It’s a factor. Whether it would be what caused [the packing plant project] to go off the rails, I don’t believe that to be true. I think it’s a factor in there that is going to add to those costs.”

Boon says he is very optimistic the plant will go ahead and, if it doesn’t, it’s not for a lack of trying.
