City to ponder public washrooms downtown

May 2, 2019 | 3:58 PM

During a discussion about improvements, both past and present, to the downtown, the issue of public washrooms arose. Or the lack of them. Councillor Cori Ramsay first broached the subject, saying everyone has the right and the need to access washrooms and there is a glaring lack of them in the downtown. The ones that are in the downtown, like those in Games Plaza, are locked. It means many frequent the washrooms at the Prince George Public Library across the way.

And Amy Dhanjal at the library says that’s fine.

“But we do acknowledge that public washrooms need attendance,” she says. “As the washrooms that are open to everyone in downtown Prince George, we do put significant resources into monitoring our washrooms and maintaining them so that they’re clean and safe and welcoming to everyone.”

Ramsay says there is a misconception that those who public washrooms are less desireable.

“Being able to comfortably have a place to go to the washroom and not having to worry about it is something that affects a lot of people, not just the homeless population.”

There were some concerns from City Administration that public washrooms would become a safety risk, but Council wanted a better picture of how it could look in the downtown.
