PRINCE GEORGE— The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program (FMNCP) is expanding to reach 250 more households in B.C.

FMNCP is a healthy eating initiative helping lower income households access fresh, locally-grown, healthy food. Community partner organizations provide coupons to lower-income families and seniors participating in their food literacy programs. Coupons can be spent at all BC Association of Farmers’ Markets (BCAFM) participating in the FMNCP, which includes the Prince George Farmers’ Market and Prince George Wilson Square Community Market.

Coupons can be used to purchase vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs, dairy, cut herbs, meat and fish. Each household enrolled in the program is eligible to receive a minimum of $21 per week in coupons.

“The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program is a fantastic initiative that works on multiple levels to support healthy, sustainable communities,” President of BCAFM Vickey Brown says. “It both increases access to local, fresh food for families, seniors and pregnant women, and supports local farmers across the province. The program benefits are far reaching and it offers unique opportunities for individuals to connect with each other around food and community.”

The program will run this year from June 11 to November 3.
