Change is coming for the downtown

PRINCE GEORGE – The downtown will be seeing a lot of change this summer, beyond the addition of housing. Foodie Fridays will be moving to the Wood Innovation Square once that park in completed.

Also, work to demolish the Days Inn will continue and the actual facility will be coming down this fall. In its place the new pool to replace the Four Seasons Pool will be built. The city is hoping to hear from the public on what’s being proposed for the new pool.

“We’ve already met with stakeholders and also happening again next week,” says Tiina Schaeffer, the Manager Sustainable Development.

Later this summer the City will be seeking input from the public on what’s being proposed for the interior and exterior of the new pool.

She says, once the Four Seasons Pool and Fire Hall #1 are re-built, the older versions will be demolished. And, again, that’s where the City seeks public input.

“We actually have some opportunity here to start thinking about how people are going to see themselves using the space now and into the future. So we want to start having that conversation. She asks if people want more walking connectivity. There is a transit interchange downtown, and so on.

Finally, in a bid to increase health and safety in the downtown, the City is going to pilot a storage program. “One of the issues that we started to learn about is that, sometimes, our homeless population can’t or won’t access services because they have nowhere to put their belongings,” explains Chris Bone, Manager of Social Planning.

“We’ve learned from some other municipalities that there is some value in creating a storage option.”

Two locations have been identified, one with outside storage and the other with interior access to better store bikes.
