Goldfish taking over lake near Terrace

Jun 22, 2019 | 8:21 AM

TERRACE— Goldfish are an invasive species and were recently identified in Lost Lake, which is located approximately 10 kilometres north of Terrace.

The Province is trying to prevent the spread of goldfish in Lost Lake by closing recreational angling. The closure begins today (June 22) and will remain in effect until further notice.

Goldfish introductions have previously had destructive effects in British Columbia. It is unknown how long the goldfish have been in Lost Lake, but there are multiple sizes of goldfish, which suggests they’re reproducing.

Biologists are completing assessments of the lake to determine the goldfish population. They are also developing management interventions and treatment options to prevent the goldfish from spreading into the Skeena watershed.
