PRINCE GEORGE — B-C’s unemployment rate followed the national trend and edged up slightly last month — although this province still maintains the lowest jobless rate in the country.
Statistics Canada says the number of people looking for work in B-C climbed to 4.5 per cent in June from 4.3 per cent the month earlier, while the national unemployment rate nudged up one-tenth of a point to 5.5 per cent.
Unemployment in two of B-C’s four largest urban centres — Abbotsford-Mission and Vancouver — fell one- and two-tenths of a point respectively, while Kelowna’s rate nudged up two basis points to 4.4 per cent and Victoria reached an even four per cent from 3.6 in June. In Prince George, the unemployment rate in June was 4.2 per cent – the same as 12 months earlier.
Overall, StatsCan says 22-hundred net positions disappeared across the country as about 24-thousand full-time jobs were created and 26-thousand part-time jobs were cut.
