Among the issues facing the Robson Valley, Thompson pointed to declining population numbers and concerns about the future of McBride Elementary School. He said enrolment at the school has fallen to roughly 40 students, creating anxiety in the community about its long-term viability.

Thompson said schools play a critical role in attracting and retaining families in rural communities and has consistently advocated for maintaining educational services in the valley.

The trustee also addressed criticism surrounding the board’s decision to approve a 28 per cent increase in trustee remuneration earlier this year.

Thompson said he supported a salary increase because of the time commitment involved in serving as a trustee, but said he was unaware the change would amount to a 28 per cent jump when the board voted on the proposal.

“I think that’s too much,” he said, adding he expected a much smaller increase.

If elected, Thompson said he would continue working on district policies and advocating for students in the Robson Valley. He added that a third term would likely be his last, saying he would be 72 years old at the end of another four-year mandate.
