Less gains from rain

Rainy weather impacting local businesses

PRINCE GEORGE— Environment Canada predicted a hot and dry summer, but so far Prince George has been relatively mild and rainy. It’s preventing some people from getting out, which is affecting some local businesses.

North City Donair & Poutine recently expanded to the Hart with a new outdoor restaurant.

“There’s a huge void in the market with no one else doing donairs, so that’s when I saw value and an opportunity, and made it happen,” North City Donair & Poutine Owner Marc-Andre Chartrand says. “The downtown community, the bowl, and right now with the location in the Hart, the community is really supporting it.”

However, Chartrand notices a significant decline in customers when it’s raining or cold.

“When it’s really sunny, it’s almost hard to manage. As soon as it rains, we see about half the customers we would normally see.”

Other businesses, like Pine Valley Golf Centre, see both negative and positive impacts from the rainy weather. People still go out to golf on rainy days, but not nearly as many people go out on a hot and sunny day. The rain is beneficial though, as it’s good for the greens and maintenance.

Environment Canada is forecasting more rain next week. Local businesses impacted by the weather are hopeful people will start to battle the precipitation and make their way out to their businesses.
