It’s not every day Olympic medalists are in the City of Prince George, and Friday morning students at Harwin Elementary School were taught the basics of curling from Canadian Olympian Karri Wilms and Sochi Silver medalist Tom Brewster.

“It’s really nice to be involved with things like this,” stated Brewster.

“Getting an opportunity to put something back into the sport. Working with the kids and you just absolutely love seeing them out and it’s all good fun.”

The event was the cherry on top for organizers of the World Women’s Curling Championship, who have been holding Learn to Curl sessions over the course of the last month and a half in the city.

“I think the first sessions the kids were equally excited about the sport and learned a lot from the session. However, this is just the icing on the cake for us to have actual Olympians here, a chance to have the kids touch the medals and take pictures with it. The timing couldn’t have been any better,” explained Vice-Chair Hosting 2020 World Women’s Curling Championship.

The organizing committee is hopeful that the Learn to Curl sessions like Friday’s and the World Championships will help grow the sport of curling here in the City of Prince George, and are especially hoping to see an increase in the number of youth curlers joining the curling club following the event.

The 2020 Women’s World Curling Championship begins on March 14.
