First Nation community tackles homelessness with micro homes

SAIK’UZ FIRST NATION – Saik’uz First Nation is located south of Vanderhoof, recently this First Nation community had 10 micro homes built to alleviate the stresses of homelessness.

The band council embarked on an agreement with Nechako Lumber to have the 320 square foot homes built within its community.

All ten of the Micro homes were built within a five-month span with the last resident moving in this week.

Over a year ago the band council found the greatest need in their community was housing.

According to Chief Priscilla Mueller, her community is growing and so is the need for suitable housing.

Apart from the 10 individual micro homes, Saik’uz also built three two-bedroom triplexes this year.
