West Coast Olefins project moving out of Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE — A bit of a pipe bomb dropped during a BC Resources Coalition Facebook Live event with Ken James, West Coast Olefins President & CEO. During the event, James confirmed the project, originally announced to be in the Prince George BCR site, will be happening on “a couple blocks of land” on the south edge of the McLeod Lake territory.
Answering the question of if it would be just part of the project moving out, James replied, “We’re looking at moving everything north of [Prince George]. We’ve heard what the community’s concerns are, we certainly respect them and see where they are coming from so rather than pushing a road we decided this was the best thing to do.”
Construction is expected in 2021. James said there is a sense that governments will push for these types of projects as a way to help with the economic recovery that will be needed due to the effects of COVID-19.
The relationship between West Coast Olefins and the McLeod Lake band is “still in the dating stage”, according to James, though he is encouraged by how meetings have gone thus far.
