OTTAWA—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that a strategic council has been formed to identify the hardest hit sectors in Canada.

Trudeau opened this morning’s address by acknowledging the 2 million jobs lost in the month of April, saying that “Canadians are hurting because of this pandemic.”

“The wage subsidy will continue to be there for you.”—Justin Trudeau

The Prime Minister announced that in order to support Canadians through this unprecedented time the Canadian government will be extending the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy beyond the month of June.

The subsidy covers 75 per cent of employers pay in an attempt to relieve some financial stress for businesses. Employers across Canada have applied for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy for over 2 million employees since applications opened last week. More details on the extension of the subsidy will be provided next week.

Trudeau mentioned that certain sectors have been harder hit by the pandemic and that a Strategic Council has been created to delve deeper into which ones and what can be done to better support them.
