Post-secondary students heading back to school reminded of provincial mental health supports

VICTORIA—As post-secondary students head back to school the Province is once again highlighting a mental-health resource for students.

Here2Talk was launched earlier this year and is a mental-health counselling and referral service that is available 24/7 for post-secondary students.

“We know that students beginning or returning to their post-secondary studies this fall may be feeling apprehensive about many things – including all the normal concerns like course work, relationships, employment on top of navigating the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic.”—Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training

“I want anyone who feels alone or isolated or overwhelmed to know that it is OK to not be OK and that there is help for you when you need it, 24/7,” said Minister Mark. The service is available to all B.C. post-secondary students.

Students can access chat sessions with a trained counsellor on their desktop or via the Here2Talk app, and are also able to speak with a counsellor by phone at 1-877-857-3397.

“Students experience high levels of stress and anxiety compounded by the pandemic. Here2Talk is a 24/7, free service that is available to post-secondary students across the province no matter where they are – because access to mental health services shouldn’t depend on where you live or the size of your bank account.”—Judy Darcy, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions

Here2Talk is in addition to other supports available on campus and in the community, including virtual mental-health supports available on the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions’ website.
