PRINCE GEORGE – The Council of Forest Industries frequently does surveys on the state of the industry, but this time, it is looking at the state of those industries that support forestry.

And some of the numbers are surprising.

As for dollars spent, Vancouver tops the list at $978 million while Prince George is second at $718 million. Third, in that list is Campbell River at $253 million.

However, when it comes to the number of companies that are dedicated to servicing the forest sector, Prince George leads the way with 970 business. The next closest is Vancouver with 560 businesses that provide some service to the forests sector.

Those companies cover a range, anything from log hauling to catering and everything in between.

“In and around Prince George and the North, people understand the importance of this fundamental sector and how important it is for so many people who deriver their livelihoods from it,” says Susan Yurkovich, President & CEO of the Council of Forest Industries. “But I think what’s going to be surprising to those in the Lower Mainland, in Richmond, Burnaby, New Westmionster, Surrey, is just the concentration of forest sector activity that’s also taking place in those communities.”

All totalled, nearly 9,900 suppliers from more than 340 communities provided $7 billion worth of goods and services to BC’s forest industry.
