BCWS burning spruce beetle ‘trap trees’ in PG area

Nov 2, 2020 | 10:30 AM

PRINCE GEORGE—The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is planning to burn spruce beetle “trap trees” starting today (Nov.2).

BCWS says that the burn site is located about 10 kilometres northwest of downtown Prince George, between Otway Road and Foothills Blvd.

Burns will take place through Nov.27, 2020.

“The decision on when to burn will depend on weather, site and venting conditions.”—Release by BCWS

Smoke and flames may be visible from North Nechako Rd., Otway Rd. Foothills Blvd., and from parts of Chief Lake Rd. and the Hart Highlands area.

The project is part of ongoing fuel management treatment to promote forest health by removing trees affected by spruce beetles, and to mitigate the risk of wildfires in interface areas.

Trap trees are trees that are cut down and deliberately left lying on the ground to attract adult spruce beetles in the spring. The BCWS says that beetles are more likely to infest a trap tree than standing trees, helping reduce the spruce beetles attacks on healthy trees nearby.
