Prince George family mourns loss of childhood home

PRINCE GEORGE – The Mamic family is still trying to process their loss, after their family home of over 20 years went up in flames Sunday morning near Tabor Lake.

Family member Jacob Mamic says he couldn’t believe what he saw when he drove up to the scene, a childhood home full of belongings and memories, gone.

Jacob was staying at his girlfriend Ashlee’s house at the time of the fire and found out when his sister called him around 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

“I was just in disbelief,” says Jacob. “I am so thankful my mom and my dad escaped safely, and my neighbours who were here instantly to help support us.”

Video captured by Tracy Calogheros shows the fire fully engulfing the home within minutes, before the Ferndale-Tabor Volunteer Firefighters could even arrive on scene.

Fire Chief at the Ferndale-Tabor Volunteer Fire Department Bryant Kemble says nobody was injured in the fire, and two residents at home at the time managed to escape along with their dog.

“People don’t realize how fast these things go,” says Kemble. “We had to do a significant amount of work to keep neighbouring houses from also catching on fire.”

The Mamic family will now have to start over, without family keepsakes and other items lost in the fire.

There is growing support for the family on GoFundMe with over $10,000 in donations already by Monday afternoon.
