New library access now open

PRINCE GEORGE – While it has been years in the making, the new entrance to the downtown library is now open to the public.

“It’s basically since I’ve here in 2011,” says Paul Burry, Library Director. “We’ve been in various stages of plans and doing community consultation and trying to get support and approval for the plan to remo0vate the entrance. ”

The downtown branch renovation is a new, three-storey entry and facade providing access from Canada Games Plaza and the covered parking area. It sports an accessible elevator that provides access from the lower parking lobby to the plaza and upper levels. There is an enhanced accessible parking and drop-off zone at parking level and the exterior is heated using the District Energy System. There are also enhancements to the circulation desk and adjoining administrative area.

But, COVID has not only put a damper on a grand opening, it has restricted access to the second floor. Burry says it is disappointing that the day could not mark the opening of the entire library.

“That’s something we debated. And we’re still planning to open the second floor of the library in early January.”
