PG Track & Field Club heating up their 2021 programming

PRINCE GEORGE – While the temperature outside might convince you otherwise, the Prince George Track and Field Club is in the heat of the planning stage for their 2021 season.

“We are hoping to have what we consider fairly regular programs in place,” said Elena Thomas, President of the PG Track and Field Club. “That’s our Track Rascals, our Junior Development group, and our Senior Masters group. So we’ll be at the track five days a week as soon as mother nature cooperates and lets the snow melt.”

Unfortunately, last year’s lockdown occurred right ahead of the club’s anticipated start for their programming.

“We had already opened up our registration and people were signing up[. The athletes were getting ready to go. It came down at the end of March that we needed to shut down so we closed registration, refunded what we could back to the athletes and their families and had to wait to see what was going on. No one really knew then what we were in for.”

Once protocols allowed for it, the club managed to create a safety plan by following return to sport guidelines from their provincial governing body in BC Athletics.

“We basically harassed the City to let us be the test subjects for re-opening the stadium and using the stadium under COVID protocols.”

Thomas is hoping track and field follow suit that other outdoor activities and sports have been experiencing through the pandemic, hoping their programming will offer up a safe and active alternative. Right now, the club is going through its facility bookings with the City, but Thomas says people can be expecting their full plan to be released next month.

The Club will also be holding the Provincial Championship jamboree in July, which has been approved by BC Athletics. The hope is that it will serve as a stepping-off point ahead of the 2022 BC Summer Games.
