A car thief is now in custody – however, PG RCMP spike the wrong truck.

– Shortly after 5:00 a.m. on February 20, 2021, RCMP from the Yukon Territory advised the Prince George RCMP a suspect driving a stolen vehicle was en route to Prince George.

PG RCMP frontline members attempted to stop the driver using a spike-belt technique on Highway 97 N near the weigh scales.

The driver was able to avoid the spike belt, however, and continued to drive south through Prince George.

RCMP Police Dog Services, Air Services, and a Crisis Negotiator joined frontline members to assist in tracking the vehicle. Using a variety of police resources, the Prince George RCMP was able to take the suspect into custody without incident just before 9:00 a.m. on Highway 97 S near Cottonwood Bridge.

“We are familiar with the suspect and his history with police and that made it a priority for us to apprehend him as quickly as possible. The suspect will remain in custody until he can attend court,” states Cst. Jennifer Cooper of the Prince George RCMP.

According to a witness on the scene, who wants to remain anonymous they told CKPG this “The police set up and spiked the wrong truck a Similar truck drop by a moment’s later fish trailing passing though on the shoulder and continue on down the hill”

The investigation is ongoing.
