PRINCE GEORGE — A Prince George woman is speaking out after nearly falling victim to tax fraud.

Amanda Keller says she received a text telling her she could check the status of her tax return just two hours after visiting her accountant Wednesday.

The text asked her to provide her social insurance number which she didn’t too after calling the tax office and being advised not too because it was likely a scam.

The RCMP say scams like this are on the increase as people begin to file their taxes.

They say fraudsters are located worldwide, including in Canada though it’s hard to estimate how many people have been defrauded because they are often too embarrassed to come forward.

They also say to never provide any personal information and to avoid hitting tex message links.
