Pair of waste diversion projects in the wings

PRINCE GEORGE – Mayor and Council got to hear about a pair of waste diversion projects that will operate somewhat in tandem.

The first came from a company called Sustane.

“We just waste so much,” noted Peter Vinall, Co-Founder of Sustane.

He says, if the plans move ahead, the company will divert clean waste from the landfill to a small plant in Prince George.

“Plastic bags are made of oil, we will convert them back. Burning plastics is a really bad idea.”

But not only will the company produce a form of biofuel, it will produce things like pellets.

The company says it could drop the local greenhouse gas emissions by 10%.

If built, it would employ about 25 people.

However, it was also noted this project is not a done deal.

Another project, though, by Canfor/Arbios much more of a possibility.

It, too, would divert waste from the landfill to create biodiesel.

That project was started several years ago with an Australian partner, Licella.

Canfor says Prince George is the preferred location for such a plant and it would be located at the Intercon facility. It would employ over a hundred people.

The company says they are optimistic for a Final Investment Decision in the third quarter of this year.
