Prince George-Valemount MLA won’t give up seat for party leader

PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George-Valemount Conservative MLA Rosalyn Bird says she will not step aside to allow Conservative Party of B.C. Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay to run in a by-election.

Bird confirmed she was approached by Findlay in recent weeks about the possibility of vacating her seat. Findlay became leader of the Conservative Party of B.C. earlier this year but does not currently hold a seat in the legislature.

After discussing the request with family and friends, Bird said she decided against giving up the riding she won in the October 2024 provincial election.

“I’ve worked too hard as an MLA to sacrifice my seat,” Bird said, explaining that she believes her focus should remain on representing the constituents who elected her.

She was one of three Conservative MLAs reportedly contacted about the possibility of stepping aside. The others were Ian Paton, MLA for Delta South, and Lynne Block, MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano.

The decision means Findlay will need to look elsewhere if she hopes to secure a seat through a by-election and enter the legislature as party leader.

No announcement has been made regarding whether another Conservative MLA may be willing to resign to create an opening for Findlay.
