Relief funding coming for hard-hit businesses

Prince George – The B.C. government will provide more than $50 million to help the 14,000 restaurants, bars, breweries, wineries, gyms, and fitness centres affected by the late March provincial health orders.

“Today, to support 14-thousand businesses, that have been impacted. We are establishing a 50-million Circuit Breaker business Relief grant. I want to thank the public service for the incredible work they have been doing, in order to turn around this grant within a week.” -Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs,Economic Recovery and Innovation

The B.C. government will provide more than $50 million to help the 14,000 restaurants, bars, breweries, wineries, gyms, and fitness centers affected by the provincial health order issued March 30. help with expenses like rent, insurance, employee wages, maintenance, and utilities. The grant can also help cover unexpected costs that resulted from the restrictions, such as the purchase of perishable goods.

Kiel Giddens who is the president of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce says, this is a much-needed stress relief for businesses in our area.

“The Chamber of commerce has been very clear, that restaurants, breweries, and the hospitality sector really should have gotten a heads up about the restrictions and some relief when those were announcement.” We are really glad to see that they are actually listening and have implemented this grant program to provide some much-needed relief to our restaurant sector. ”

More than $50 million from the $345-million Small and Medium-Sized Business Recovery Grant program has been set aside for businesses through this new grant fund. The individual amount a business receives will be based on the number of employees. The Relief Grant is open to eligible businesses of any size. To ensure affected businesses can access the funds quickly, the Circuit Breaker Business Relief Grant has a streamlined application.

“So the previously small and media sized business recovery grant has been a challenge, there have been improvements and so we are looking to see if this program, is rolled out in a way that they are easy to access. said Giddens “SO that is one thing the chamber of commerce will be watching for. ”

Giddens said the chamber is also available to help members if needed. Applications for the Circuit Breaker Business Relief Grant are expected to open next Monday.
