Council supports Barkerville
PRINCE GEORGE – Mayor Lyn Hall has added his name to a long list of others in signing a letter to Premier John Horgan support of Barkerville. The historical site is asking the government to help them with $670,000 to offset a budget shortfall going into this season.
“We aren’t just a creative tourism site. We are Barkerville as a historical heritage resource,” explains Kate Cox, CEO of Barkerville. “And that’s the draw. So we drive tourism by default.”
In fact, they conservatively estimate the add $25 million in tourism dollars. But the fact is costs are rising and the facilities are becoming degraded without the funds to improve them. But, while Barkerfville is funded like a museum, it is much more than that.
