New Off-Leash plan presented

PRINCE GEORGE – Council recent got an update on a portion of the Parks Strategy, specifically around off-leash parks. After doing public consultation, a couple of new off-leash parks were identified.

“Right now the City of Prince George, we have four off-leash areas,” explains Michael Le Morvan, Parks Engineer for the City. “Up in the Hart, we have Bravery Park. We have Ginter’s Meadow, we have Moore’s Meadow and we have Duchess Park. The proposed ones are in College Heights and Millar Addition.”

Specifically, in College Heights, the City is looking at Malaspina Park and in the Millar Addition, the City is looking at Ingledew Park.

But before the City moves ahead on dog parks, there needs to be consideration of design, according to dog advocate Anie Booth. “You really do have to think about maintenance,” says Booth. “You also have to do some thoughtful planning around putting together a dog park. So the space is set up so dogs can’t get cornered, that there are areas where people can sit where they won’t cause problems when the dogs are running. They often put in a small dog park that never gets used or used very rarely. So there are a lot of studies on the appropriate design of dog parks. It would be useful if the City actually looked into it.”

The City has earmarked some funding for the new parks, but before they move ahead, there will be neighbourhood consultation.

And, yes, you heard it. Ginter’s Meadow and Moore’s Meadow have transitioned from pilot project status to official off-leash dog parks.
