Supplemental feeding increases the population growth rate of an endangered caribou herd

PRINCE GEORGE – For the past few years, a local biologist Doug Heard has spearheaded an experiment to feed high-quality food pellets to an endangered herd of caribou to see if the population growth rate will increase.

Heard has been leading a research project to build the local Kennedy Siding Caribou herd population from going extinct for the last six years.

In a recently released report, his research shows the woodland caribou population is on the upswing.

With the help of local and provincial partnerships, Heard developed a study that would allow him to build feeding stations and at the same time collect data on the wild caribou.

Heard plans to continue working with the vulnerable woodland caribou herd and hopes what has been learned so far will help with other fragile herds.
