PRINCE GEORGE- On Wednesday, over 3,500 people lost their lives in India because of COVID-19, the highest single-day death toll due to the virus in Canada was 222 back in May 2020.

A local student and member of the CNC Student Union, Guntas Thapar says she worries about her family overseas, knowing many in her family have tested positive for the virus.

“When you open social media, Instagram or Facebook all you hear is shortage of oxygen and people are dying in hospitals, so you get worried about your family members,” says Thapar.

Thapar says she speaks with her family daily to get updates on their condition, she says all of which have fortunately been recovering at home.

The situation in India is increasingly challenging as vaccines cannot keep up with the transmission of cases, which is over 300,000 a day according to health officials.

Many public health experts say the numbers are underestimating how bad the situation is.
