World Women’s Curling makes a return

PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George should be expecting an announcement for Curling Canada “in the weeks to come” around the World Women’s Curling Championship.

The event was the first major cancellation for the City because of COVID. At the time, there was a promise from Curling Canada that the event would make a return to the city, but firm timelines were set out. And now Council has learned when that date is.

Next year.

It will be the first to return after the pandemic.

“It was very much the first event that had to be cancelled [bcause of the COVID pandemic]. People were literally setting up when the decision had to come down not to have it take place,” says City Councillor Garth Frizzell. “So to have this as the bookend that opens it up for us. It just couldn’t be a nicer fit.”

But he says there is much work to be done between when Curling Canada formally makes the announcement and the event itself.

But Council got that ball rolling Monday night, buy re-committing funds set aside in 2019 and held by Curling Canada and in-kind.

However, the City is quick to acknowledge that final dates will only be determined by Curling Canada.
