PRINCE GEORGE – Is Prince George ready for a new performing arts centre?

That was an idea floated around Council Chambers Monday night after discussions around the condition of the Playhouse highlighted a need.

Council recently approved spending $411,000 to make the Playhouse usable after a December storm ripped portions of the exterior cladding and the poor condition of the facility. But it was noted at the time that the Playhouse is the only venue available to that arts genre.

However, the bill to make the facility top-notch, including a new parking lot, is closer to $7 million. It was an unappetizing figure to many Councillors. It opened up a discussion around another facility more suitable to more genres.

The first step in the process, though, is for the City to collect a report on what genres of arts exist in Prince George.

“It’s time that we looked at what the community needs and through that latest strategy I think we have a pretty good idea,” says Mayor Lyn Hall. “But there’s still a tremendous amount of consultation that’ll take place and has to take place. That’s Council’s next step.”

The hope is to have that report back before year’s end.
