PRINCE GEORGE – Heat illnesses can affect you quickly and can lead to long-term health problems and even death. This is mainly caused by being over-exposed to extreme heat especially if you are doing too much for your age and physical condition.

“Those are both spectrums of the same disease, heat exhaustion comes on first, followed by heatstroke. So heat exhaustion is when you’re getting much too hot, your body temperature is rising. You might start to feel a bit cold and clammy and maybe a bit confused nausea and vomiting. And, you know these are symptoms you know where it’s really clear you need to get to a cool space right away. Find some either shade, some air conditioning, get hydrated right away, you know to drink lots of water those are very important steps to take right away if you are feeling those symptoms.”

Health risks are greatest for:

– Older adults,

– Infants, and young children,

– People who work in the heat,

– People who exercise in the heat

So Dr.Rakel has a few tips for those trying to beat the heat

“The best thing to do right away is to, just seek somewhere cool and to drink lots of water.”

So, be sure to stay hydrated, find some shade, or hide in your basement when you can, and avoid heading out during the hottest parts of the day if you can.
