PRINCE GEORGE – After reports from the public, fire crews from the Pineview and Buckhorn Volunteer Fire Halls were able to get a grass fire under control on the side of Highway 97.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, although several witnesses who were at the scene claim the blaze could have been started by a cigarette butt.

There were no injuries reported from the fire which spread close to 100 feet in size near Holmes Road south of Prince George.

Crews arrived on the scene just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday and had the blaze completely under control before 5 p.m.

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George thanks the public for reporting the fire so quickly so crews could respond while the blaze was still small in size, and serves as a reminder of the extremely dry conditions.

BC Wildfire Service crews were ready to respond, but their services were not needed.

If you see a fire you are urged to call 9-1-1 or *5555 on your cell phone to report a wildfire.
