New sewage disposal rates coming down the pipe?

PRINCE GEORGE – Hundreds of Prince George residences are on their own septic system and the waste from those systems ends up in one of the City’s five lagoons.

But the Shelley Lagoon is in a bit of trouble. It was built in the 1970’s when environmental regulations were far less stringent than they are today.

“Over the years, the material that was brought to that site ranged from catch-basin cleanouts and, in some cases, we were using it for disposal of car wash waste. What happens with car wash waste is you get a combination of hydrocarbons that come off the vehicle. Any kind of antifreeze that might be present and also the metals that are associated with brakes and rust and all those types of things,” explains Wil Waddell, Manager of Utilities.

And the City will likely have to raise users fees to not only maintain the facility but pull together a reserve for the rehabilitation that will be required.

Late last year, the City passed increases to the Comprehensive Fees and Charges Bylaw, which encompasses what users pay for dumping fees. But users came out fighting and the City opted to hang off any fee increases. Now, it’s on the table again.

“We’re going to have a little more public consultation. we’re going to have some discussions about where we’re going to go. We’re going to start off with about 50 percent of the fees that we originally proposed,” says Waddell.

The hope is that new fees, whatever they will be, will come into play in the new year.
