Still no details on back to school plan, face mask mandate for upcoming school year

PRINCE GEORGE – When the last school year ended in June, everyone hoped the doors may have been closed on a pandemic weary learning environment, however that may not be the case.

The delta variant of COVID-19 has led to some new concerns as the next school year approaches.

“With the delta variant there are so many unknowns,” says Shuirose Valimohamed, Trustee for the SD57 Board of Education.

Valimohamed wants the province to consider a face mask mandate for the public school system this fall, the BC Teachers Federation has also called for similar measures at least to start the school year.

The BC Ministry of Education has not provided any direction or plan since June as to what this year may look like.

Valimohamed says her patience for a plan is starting to run out, going as far as to say if local school districts have no say in their own face mask mandate or other COVID-19 measures there is no point of them existing.

The Ministry of Education says further details are expected soon.
