Vanderhoof vaccinations “sad”

VANDERHOOF – Civic officials in Vanderhoof are becoming increasingly disturbed over the local vaccinations rates in that community and immediately around it.

Mayor Gerry Thiessen says, between August 1st and 14th, there were 68 cases in the Nechako region, which includes Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, and Fraser Lake. That number compares to the 347 cases in that region between January 2020 and August 1st of 2021.

“It seems to be, certainly the most vocal ones, are people who really struggle with the science,” says Vanderhoof Mayor Gerry Thiessen. He encourages people who are uncertain to talk to their doctors.

According to Northern Health, 70% of the population has received at least one dose of the vaccine. And, as per the graph below, some regions in Northern Health are better off than others.

Northwest: Pop’l 1st Dose 2nd Dose

Kitimat 8,268 90% 73%

Haida Gwaii South 2,188 88% 80%

Haida Gwaii North 1,882 81% 70%

Prince Rupert 11,952 81% 69%

Northern Interior: Pop’l 1st Dose 2nd Dose

Prince George North 15,753 75% 66%

Prince George West 15,463 81% 72%

Vanderhoof 5,459 60% 49%

Vanderhoof Rural 2,159 54% 47%

And, unfortunately, the lack of a vaccinated population in Vanderhoof has resulted in businesses have to close their doors for a while.
