Dead black bear leads to investigation by BC Conservation Officer Service

Aug 24, 2021 | 4:38 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – With help from the public the BC Conservation Officer Service discovered a dead black bear in the Nechako River last week near Cottonwood Island.

An investigation was immediately launched as CO’s discovered the bear had been shot.

Following accounts from witnesses nearby, Conservation Officers believe a dark coloured Ford Ranger pickup truck with a male driver dumped the bear at the end of North Nechako Road sometime on August 16 or 17.

“We’re looking for any information from what anyone may have seen or heard,” says Eamon Mcarthur with the BC Conservation Officer Service. “Hopefully a license plate number, but we need any information that could be of assistance in this investigation.”

If Conservation Officers find out who is behind the shameless act there are a number of fines and violations that could come into play, under the BC Wildlife Act.

This incident comes as bear activity ramps up with winter approaching and bears preparing for hibernation.

If you have any information you’re asked to call the RAPP line by dialing 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP) or #7277 on the TELUS Mobility Network.

If the situation is not an emergency, report the incident online or contact the nearest Conservation Officer Service district office.
