Wheelin Warriors preparing for local Tour de Cure

Aug 26, 2021 | 5:20 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – Wheelin Warriors of the North are preparing to conquer local streets on Saturday in the Tour de Cure. Unlike years before, the ride is being held in 5 regional areas, including Prince George.

“I am super excited to be a part of the team, the team is fun, and the back story on the whole reason why Wheelin Warriors started is super inspiring,” Said Cyclist Sylvia Masich.

There will be over 30 riders on the road, between Pineview and Purden Lake on Saturday morning and the Wheelin Warriors want to remind drivers to be extra cautious when out on the road.

“We are asking motorists to slow down, pass with care and caution. Don’t honk the horns until you pass a cyclist. If you are honking the horns behind them, that will startle a cyclist, and you don’t know what will happen,” Said Co-Captain Ron Gallo.

Ron also praised the work by YRB for making sure roadways are ready for cyclists. Crews were out spraying and sweeping both sides of Highway 16 on Thursday clearing debris from previous roadwork.

Wheelin Warriors started back in 2013 and since then has raised over one million dollars for cancer treatment research. Many of the riders have a personal connection to the cause and chose to ride in honor of their loved ones and friends.

“One of my best friends passed away from skin cancer and I wanted to do something to honor her. I saw the ride – I liked that it involved cancer research and cycling so I started recruiting,” said Wheelin Warriors of the North Founder, Karin Piche.

Every year Karin designs the jerseys for the team, inspired by her friend who lost her battle to cancer

“She died of skin cancer. Skin cancer is black in cancer ribbons. The first year the jersey was black and I wanted to stay with the black and white theme. We have incorporated some colour over the years which represents all of the colours of cancer,” added Piche.

If you would like to cheer on the riders you are welcome to join them at the start and finish of their journey at Pineview Elementry School.
