Demand for distance learning in SD57 nearly tripled last year

PRINCE GEORGE – The numbers are in, and the demand for distance learning nearly tripled in School District 57 last school year compared to pre-pandemic levels.

In the 2019/20 school year, there were only 157 students registered for distance learning, compared to 415 who registered last fall.

“At this time last September, it was a lot of wide eyes and oh what are we in for,” said Rob Lewis, Vice Principal of SD57’s Distance Learning and Continuing Education Department.

Eventually, it did work out for everyone who chose the distance education model last school year.

According to the province, the number of those expected to enroll this school year should drop off closer to normal levels.

The distance learning model allows students to be assigned to a teacher, even though they may not be in a classroom every day.

The homeschooling model is a different program entirely with parents assigned the role of educator.

The number of kids enrolled in distance learning also drastically impacts how schools are funded.
