Winter tires could be harder to get this season

PRINCE GEORGE – If you don’t have a good set of winter tires, you might want to get some sooner rather than later as there may be a winter tire shortage this season.

“We have been preparing for a bit of a shortage of tires for this season. We did order about a thousand winter tires earlier in the spring to make sure we will have stock this season,” Said OK Tire’s Service Advisor Tristen Popowich.

Too many factors are playing against the tire industry for there to be enough winter tires produced and shipped in time for winter.

“The ports over seas that have been getting the raw materials to manufacturers, have been low on the sea containers getting stuff shipped back and forth. There is also a shortage of hands to unload the stock that we have been getting in,” added Popowich.

All this is on the heels of the global microchip shortage that the auto industry is still recovering from.

Winter tires are not mandatory in B.C. however starting October 1, they are required on certain highways and roads. Here in Prince George, you will need winter tires on Highway 16 and 97, without them police could ticket you.
