“Mine, definitely a pumpkin spice latte with a little bit of chai, and of course, oat milk,” said The Open Door Barista, Cybele Taylor-Ouellet.

Without the added flavors, sugar, or creams, coffee is actually an acquired taste which according to Dr. Whitcombe, is something our brain grows to enjoy as it develops.

“The compound it is a bitter compound, you have to train your brain to accept drinking coffee. You start off drinking maybe a cup a day, then maybe two or three a day. It has longer effects because it alters the brain chemistry, so when you stop drinking coffee you notice it,” added Dr. Whitcombe.

For coffee drinkers it is more than just the energy boost and flavors, it is also a conversation tool.

“[Being a barista] it is the fast-paced environment and connecting with people via something they really enjoy. And giving something to someone that makes their day a little better,” added Cybele.

Starbucks turned 50 on National coffee day and celebrated by giving away free pike place roast brewed coffee to anyone who brought in a reusable cup and Tim Hortons launched their own clothing line called the ‘Double Double Collection.’
