Permissive tax exemptions to be reviewed

PRINCE GEORGE – Normally the discussion around permissive tax exemptions for a number of properties doesn’t generate much discussion around Council Chambers.

That was not the case last night.

Certain groups, like non-profits and tenant organizations, like youth baseball, have their property taxes waived. But another group generated plenty of discussions: places of worship. And, in particular, the Prince George diocese.

“When I used the example of the diocese, I wasn’t intending to target any one specific property,” explains Councillor Kyle Sampson. “It’s just a good example of ‘Is that property being utilized for community worship? Is it being used for any other church programming? Or religious ceremony or anything like that?’ That would be the intended use of this permissive tax exemption.”

He says if there is a business operating out a portion of the church that’s not being used for religious purposes “maybe that’s not a permissive tax exempted piece of the property.”

“Really, I just wanted to go through and have a review done. If it comes back and “is all perfect and good to go, that’s great.”

For 2022, there are 205 properties that will be exempt from paying taxes, at a cost of $1,996,364.11.
