ICBC highlights importance of driver safety during holidays
NORTHERN BC- As British Columbians gather together to celebrate, vehicle crashes tend to rise around this time of year, according to ICBC. An average 15 people are injured in 75 crashes on North Central roads every year on Christmas, which is defined as December 24 at 6 pm to December 26 at midnight. Additionally, an average one person is killed and seven people are injured in 45 crashes during New Year’s in the North Central region.
Across the province, ICBC says an average 540 people are injured in over 1,900 crashes in BC over Christmas and New Year’s. This equates to 23 crashes every single hour. Additionally, an average of three deaths are reported every year during this timeframe.
Drivers need to take extra precautions such as staying updated on road conditions, avoiding distractions, slowing down and planning for a safe ride home during the holiday season. ICBC says road users should check their vehicle to ensure it is winter ready, especially when planning a trip through mountain passes or areas that experience winter conditions.
The provincial government also put out a statement urging driver safety. Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure says driving according to weather conditions is especially important given the damage that flooding has caused to many BC roads.
