Grandchild fraud calls are making the rounds

PRINCE GEORGE – Police would like to inform the public that grandchild scams are making their rounds, and seniors are being targeted. Seniors around the province have lost thousands of dollars to the scam.

The Grandchild fraud usually includes a suspect calling a senior citizen pretending to be a police officer, lawyer, or the person’s grandson. The suspect tells them that their grandson has been arrested and requires bail money.

According to Prince George RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Cooper police do not collect cash. They don’t collect money at the detachment to release someone on bail. That is something done through the courthouse. A police officer will never call, or your grandchild will never be allowed to call if they are in custody.

RCMP suggests one way to protect seniors in your life is to talk to them and educate them about the most recent scam.

Fraud of any type is concerning when it targets seniors as it can take advantage of their emotions.

If you were a victim of this scam, please make a report to your local police even if no money was given. For a list of current cons or to report fraud online, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
