Local event organizers excited for full capacity

PRINCE GEORGE – It was two years ago in March. The ice was ready and the teams from around the world were in the town, the international television crews were set to put Prince George in the spotlight. And then? Nothing. The Championships were cancelled due to COVID. But the event is back on the table and the news of 100 percent capacity is a huge relief.

“It allows us to be able to bring more people in,” says Jen Rubideau with the World Women’s Curling Championships Organizing Committee. “Which brings more excitement which, in itself, makes for a more wonderful experience for all involved.”

She says they can now open up to bulk ticket sales and a much larger presence in the stands.

Another major event coming to the city this year is the BC Summer Games in July. While many of the events are outdoors and less restricted for capacity, there was one events organizers were initially concerned about.

“One of the areas that we were closely watching what was happening was with respect to opening ceremonies. And it’s such a great atmosphere for the athletes,” says Renee McCloskey. “It really makes them feel like super stars. If we can have a full venue of excited community members, family members all cheering them on. We’re excited that it’s looking like we’ll be able to forge ahead with those plans.”

But, while capacity restrictions on indoor and outdoor sporting events have been lifted, organizers for the BC Summer Games say they will proceed with caution. The future of the pandemic is anything but sure.

Yesterday’s news from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has changed the whole picture of these two events and others coming to the city in the coming months.
