PRINCE GEORGE – As more COVID-19 rapid tests are distributed for the education community in BC, the numbers of absences are in from January which shattered records.

School District 57 was one of a select group of districts across BC not to have a functional closure since Christmas break.

While schools remained open, the district faced a fair amount of challenges during that time regardless according to those involved.

The Prince George District Teachers Association (PGTDA) said many of its members are exhausted

“We were told even a few weeks ago that Omicron was starting to peak in British Columbia and we still didn’t have tests available,” said Daryl Beauregard, First Vice-President of the PGDTA. “Rapid tests could’ve kept people at work if they knew they had a cold, but you have to be very cautious.”

According to Beauregard, 138 teachers were away on at least one day last month, the previous record was 110 teachers away during the surge in cases of the Delta variant.

Typically during cold and flu season, only 40-50 teachers are away at a given time.

In response, SD57 has been hiring more teachers on call, and a significant amount of unqualified teachers on call.

As of January, SD57 had 170 qualified TTOC’s while boasting 94 TTUC’s to help. Since September the district has added 83 teachers to try and prepare for increased absences.
